get your community to agree in a meeting some simple objectives.
What is a Social Access Link?
A Social Access Link (SAL) is a place in your community where you can go to
find information and do things relevant to you using ICT!!
What would you like to be able to do?
Education? Gist!! with friends? Email Friends abroad? Find a Business? Find a
Job! Make Music? Find Farm Prices? Find Outlets for your goods? Learn Something
New? Shopping? Help with Homework?
You can do this and much more, right here in your community in partnership with
Wetinbe.
You can do it!!
A Social Access Link will give you all the help and advice to set up a complete
Internet enabled computer in your area. You can easily add additional computers
onto our network to create a Community Internet Café, that is run and owned by
the Community, with profits invested back into the Community.
Less than 1% of the population has home internet broadband access that will
help them in every day life. A Social Access Link gives that access to everyone. This puts your
community right up there with every other Community in the world, that sees
Access to the Internet as a right.
Access for all to Information and Services
A Social Access Link (SAL) can give everyone instant access to local
information and services, including Government Services, E-mail services,
Business services, local news and a Community notice board. Using Wetinbe
Gist!! you can also chat and send messages and photos to friends around the
world, often for FREE.
If you wish you could use a computer, but feel they are too complicated, then
think again. Computers open up life enhancing possibilities. For experienced
users, without home computer access to the internet, A community access can
offer total internet access.
What can you have on a Social Access Link (SAL)?
You can add extra computers to the one we will give you, as well as software to
do virtually anything. WetinBe gives you access to the Internet and it is up to
your community to decide what it wants to use it for. For instance, a local
hotel might want it to take bookings, and can have its clients use the Internet
from the hotel, but a local farmer might need it to check farm commodity
prices, on the Community Computer, and a young family can use it to send
pictures to their family around the world.
How do you get it?
You need to print this brochure out and arrange a meeting from which a Steering
Group of local people will be formed with a wide spread of ages and interests.
The Steering Group will then decide where the equipment will be sited, and
report to WetinBe on why they want it and how they will make it accessible to
all.
What is the Steering Group responsible for?
The Steering Group is responsible for agreeing the best site for the computer
and satellite dishes (if required) within the community.
This location could be a Church, School, or Community Hall.
For the first 2 years the Steering Group will look after the equipment and
ensure it is made available to all.
The Steering Group will ensure that financial sustainability options are
reasonable and that the Community will pay all access charges to the Internet.
In subsequent years the Steering Group will assume ownership on behalf of the
Community and ensure all costs are met.
What the Social Access Link (SAL) can do:
The Community Access is a total Village resource giving personal Internet
access, accessibility to Jobs and Learning Opportunities, Leisure Pursuits,
Local News and Community Information.
Why is it available?
Because Wetinbe believes that your Community deserves the same access to the
World Wide Web (Internet) as everyone else in the world.
WetinBe does not want your community to be left behind in this era of
Information Technology.
Is there a Cost for the Internet Equipment?
Yes. Your community will have to contribute towards the purchase of the
Internet equipment and raise funds to do this locally. Other Grants may be
available to support the Cost.
We will advise you on detailed costs when we see your proposal, but it is usual
for Wetinbe to contribute about 50% of the installation costs of the
Installation as part of its Community Philosophy.
What help is available?
The WetinBe Social Access team will be available to support you during the
setting up period. This support will include help in:
* Forming your steering Group
* Setting up the facility
* Training
